Hello listeners and welcome back to a case for debating podcast. Joining me today is my friend and neighbor, Betty. Hi. How's the day going, Betty? Good. Okay, are you excited to be on the third episode? Yeah. As you all know, we have the results for last week's episode, and that episode was about if we should replace all the cars on the road with self-driving cars or if we should still allow humans to be able to drive to coincide with self-driving cars. Do you have a guess on who might have won, Benny? I'm guessing that people want to still drive. Quite the contrary, actually. There were three responses for this week, so a little bit better than last week when only had two. But actually, two people voted for team self-driving cars, and only one person uh voted for team human driving cars. Henry won that last episode. Congratulations, Henry. Would you like to introduce what we are debating about this week, Betty? Is skiing or snowboarding better? Okay. This is a fun debate. This was actually very easy to come up with. It was the first topic that popped into Betty's head, wasn't it? Yeah. Well, without further ado, let's kick it off. Okay, Betty, can you tell me a few key reasons why you think snowboarding is better? You can do cooler tricks and you look cooler when you're just snowboarding. And also, you don't have two things to take care of, and you only have one thing to take care of. So I how do you look cooler? I still don't understand. Well, you can go all the way down to the ground and skiing if you go turn like at least like this much, you just fall. Did you look that cool when you were first starting out and you kept falling on your butt every time you hit a patch device? No, but if you were skiing and you just started, it would look even worse because it's har so hard to get up. When you first start skiing, there's some simple things you can use to start. You can do like a pizza or snow cloud. You've skiered before. You used to ski. So it's super easy to learn how, and then you can constantly get better at it, and you fall less and you fall on your butt less. And yes, it is easier to get up when you're snowboard, but snowboarders will end up falling so much more than skiers will when they're first starting out. And then snowboarders just have such a hard time at the top of the mountain. They're always like waddling around and doing whatever and secure their straps, but skiers just have poles or they can push with their skis, so it's super easy to get around wherever you want to go. Well, I mean, it you do have to walk or get unbuckled and buckle in, but that's why you could just buy clip in bindings, and then you just step into it and then you're buckled in. It's still harder to get around. No, you I go faster than skiers when I'm snowboarding. You have to sit not a dog. Oh, that's right. You just you just screw it in. Uh what if you're uh stuck in like powdery snow, like really deep, it's way harder to get around skiing. I guess so. The also the other thing is skis are actually a lot safer because snowboards, if you do something weird or like miss a trick, their bindings don't come out much and you can't really adjust them. So they would just stay and you could do things like break your ankle, where on skis the binding would come out and you would the you wouldn't have to worry about hurting anything or the ski or the snowboard or anything. How would the binding come out on a skiing? If there's too much force, it just pops out. If you're snowboarding, you just have to lift up two things. You know how people are skiing, then they fall and their skis fall off? Yeah. That's the bindings coming out. Oh. But the thing is, snowboarders are pretty crazy, so like we don't care if we get hurt. Oh better. Except if it's like the last day or like the first day of the season. Let's say you wanted to go on a trip where you would have to like climb mountains and ski down. You couldn't really do that on a snowboard unless you wanted to carry the snowboard all the way up, which would be annoying. But on skis, you could put skins on the skis that just grip into the snow. So you can walk up on your skis and then just ski down, which is super helpful in the backcountry. But snowboarding boots, like, they're really easy to walk around in, and skiing boots, those really hurt. No, you put skins on your skis. If you had for snowboarders, you either have to carry this heavy board on your back up at like for miles up a mountain, or you get like expensive boards. Or you could j but snowboarding snowboarders are way lighter than skis. So they're pretty easy to carry. They're heavy. You want to lie? You wanna carry a snowboard up three miles? I would for the ride down. Wouldn't you rather just walk up the mountain and ski down? No. No. Because skiing isn't good. Snowboarding's way better. Yeah, what's better about it? Everything. Like the boots, like they're so comfortable. Skiing boots, they hurt your toes so much. I know from experience. It can be a lot harder to learn to snowboard because you have to lead and do weird things. But with skis, you literally just shift your weight in the way that you want to go and you go there. That's what you do for snowboarding. You have to like lead back. I've heard like skiers say that's way easier to learn how to snowboard, but harder to master, but it's so hard to learn how to ski, but easier to master. Now I've seen it by all of my skier friends. They all say that. And also all my snowboarder friends all say that. Yeah, biz, they're your snowboarder friends. Also, my skier friends say that. They do. Yep, they do. Let's see that bit. That's just weird. Yeah, I don't agree with that. But there are new ski boots that are coming out that feel a lot better and are a lot easier to put on than like the clunky robot boots that we have now. Um I've seen them in a few stores. They're not becoming very popular, but I've seen one before, and they're definitely starting to come out and replace these other ones. I've seen these clue bindings. Like all you like they're even easier than um clip-in bindings. Cause like, or step-in bindings. And yeah, I've seen them because like my cousin uses them and they're from Germany. What are they? Clue bindings. Yeah, but what do you do what happens with them? I've n I don't really know, but it's Are they step-ins? Basically. But they're like easier. How are they easier? Like you just if you lift something, then you're just out of the boot. And to get in, you just uh lift it and then you step in it. Oh, so you don't have to do like a weird like screw thingy? Yeah. Uh yeah. Well I feel like when we get when these skew boots become more popular, I think then they'll feel a lot s more similar to snowboard boots. I guess so. That can't really be an argument anymore. If they're just gonna be the same thing. Yeah. But who knows, they might not be the same thing. Okay. I do have a thing that I think would be really cool for our listeners to do. What if the listeners record a voicemail with fan mail and tell us if you did a trick a snowboarder or a skier would look cooler? And as well as voting, if you want and you can also give your thought on if snowboarding or skiing is better. Do you like that, Benny? Okay. I'm wondering what cost more, a snowboard or a skis. It matters what size it is. In the long run, skiing definitely is structurally superior. Like, skis have two edges that make two independent edges, which makes it super easy to turn and gives you unmatched control to a snowboard. And the good thing that when you're on a snowboard, you have to like strain to look in front of you, and you can't really see behind you. But when you're on skis, you can really see everywhere you really need to. You can see in front of you super easily, and you can see to both sides of you, and even partly in the back with your peripheral vision. So it makes it a lot easier to identify things that you might need to avoid or like people oncoming. I really agree with that, because if you're snowboarding, you're like sideways, so you can see this way really easily, and you can see that way really easily, and you can see behind you really easily, and then the other side, you can just go the other way. Like if you're goofy, then you can just go regular, because like you can just learn how to do that, and then you can see that way. That's like saying if you want to see behind you in skis, just ski backwards if you know how to do that. Well, yeah. But it's easier to go like the other way in snowboarding than skiing. Okay. Well, you I think had prepared a few more things that you were talking about before. Would you like to share those? Yeah, I would. Um, well, as you know, the comfortable gear. I already said that before. When you're in the powder, like really powdery snow, it feels like you're surfing instead of like just like riding over it the waves instead of like surfing on the waves. Yeah, that's really good for powder like out west, but here in the northeast, we have mostly not powder. There's usually flat snow and ice. So, yes, if you live out west, snowboarding could be a fun app option. Of course, you couldn't do the backcountry stuff that a lot of people like to do out there. But that could be a better option. But where we live in the northeast, you can't really have that because it doesn't actually feel like that with no powder. I mean, I go to Stratton and like every year there's at least like at least at like a minimum, like 15 feet of snow every year. Or every winter. Yeah, that feels like powder, but it isn't really like it is out west where there is powder every day. Like that's how they ski. They ski and snowboard in powder. So what we have isn't really powder. It's um it's fresh snow, yes, but it won't really make a difference as much here if you have skis or snowboard. If you're snowboarding, you have a lower risk of getting a knee injury, which is like the worst injury that you can get for skiing and snowboarding. I don't really see how a snowboard would prevent a knee injury. It has a lower risk of a knee injury. Wonder how that is. Okay. Well, that was all the time for this week. Don't forget to go and vote on our debate voting forum on our website. Uh don't forget to send us fan mail. We always really appreciate that. And do you have any last things to say, buddy? Snowboarding is better than skiing. He's wrong, and everybody knows it. Everybody knows that I'm right. Okay, well, thank you for listening. And if you're interested, be sure to listen to our post show, which will come right after this. Okay, so it's winter time and it's a snow day. We're both home. There is two feet of snow. What do you want to do? I would like to go sledding. Oh, remember when we when you first got those like snow scooters?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Those snow scooter things. We first used them on the small hill, and then you decided to make a huge ramp and then you and then a jump. And it almost like broke a bone or something from falling. Those were so fun. Yeah. I feel like there hasn't been good snow to like make a snowman. In Vermarts been pretty good. Remember jumping on the trampoline with all the ice on it? Because there was a huge piece of lace on it last year. Yeah, I did. I thought we were gonna have to get a new one. We all did. Oh. I told you, I just don't think you remembered. Once when I was with one of my friends, um, we were using the snow skirters, and there's a big rock in my front yard, and we used it as a jump, and I did a 180. Okay. Well, any listeners that enjoyed or that stick around for this post show, thank you. And I hope you come back two weeks to listen. Uh did you like this episode, Betty? Yeah. Okay. Well, goodbye, everybody. Bye.
