Welcome to A Case For..., the weekly podcast where we step into the courtroom of daily life to cross-examine a brand-new issue. Every single week, one contestant will come on the show to sit down to debate the biggest, most controversial, or downright strangest topics of our generation with the host. One of us builds the case, the other tears it down, and the truth is always a wildcard.
In our debut episode, we take on the ultimate modern debate: Is AI progress unstoppable?
We dive headfirst into geopolitical arms races, open-source tech, resource limits, and whether any government actually has the power to pause AI. Listen in and cast your vote on who won the case!

Hello listeners and welcome to the first episode of a case for debating podcast. Today I would like to welcome our first contestant and my friend Olton. How are you doing, Olton? Good. You excited to be on the first uh episode today? Yes. Okay. So you probably might have guessed from the title of the episode, but Alton, would you like to reveal what we are debating about today? We're debating about how AI will be stopped or how AI is unstoppable. Yeah, so essentially if AI will be stopped and that only, not if it should be stopped, because we both definitely agree that it should be stopped at some point. But today we are debating about if it will be stopped. Alton is representing the it will be stopped argument, and I am representing the argument that it will not be stopped, and it will take over the world and ruin humanity. So that'd be interesting. But as you all know, the debate does not end here. You guys will all be able to vote over on our website, and that will determine the true winner. So without further ado, let's get into it. Okay. First of all, Brycen, I want to ask you, why did you use AI to help make this podcast video? Well, it was actually a very useful tool for podcasters to create things like episode outlet and transcripts. So what AI did for me in a matter of, I don't know, seconds would have taken me probably a half hour to do. So that was super helpful. And that is probably gonna make our episode go smoother. And my editing software also uses a little bit of AI, which will be able to make this audio sound more crisp than it is right now. Okay, so why do you think AI is unstoppable? Well, I think AI is unstoppable because us humans have worked ourselves into a corner where we have just kept giving it more and more power and we have been making breakthroughs with it. There's some robots, like the Tesla robot, that are gonna be able to do chores around the house and be able to learn more as they're doing it. So I think with these new robots coming out and things that we're gonna have a less and less chance of being able to stop it. Yes, we could just turn it off one day, but are these big corporations like OpenAI and even Google and these other corporations that are making well, they've spent billions of dollars to make this infrastructure, and this is basically most of these AI companies' profit, like this is what they're making. So if they were to just turn the lights off one day, they would be losing billions of dollars. So I'd like to know why you think that humans will be able to stop it. Because how can you resist karate chopping a bunch of robots? Yeah, and who's gonna do that? Me? How? I don't know, with karate chops. I wanna hear more about how you think it will be stopped, and I wanna hear about how you think these billion-dollar corporations will just be shut down one day. Um, we just start turning off all our AI devices. Then they don't get any more money. So we humans devices. Yeah. So you think all humans are gonna do that? Not all, but we if we can convince some of them. Can you give me a more in-depth argument about that? Basically, people will start protests to stop using AI, and then the people who made AI won't get as much profit from it. I guess that if people really saw what people are doing with all of this AI stuff, then people wouldn't be as turned to use all this AI stuff. Because if AI is just gonna if everyone thinks AI is gonna take over the world, then do you think everyone's gonna sit around and just be like, that's cool, AI will take over the world. Well, I think most of humans are dumb enough to let that happen. I find that extremely insulting. Well, that that's insulting to humankind. There are tons of smart people, but perhaps not enough. And even smart people are tempted by money. Numerous amounts of money comes from AI. Tons of tech businesses are moving to AI and making tons of money off it, which makes me think that they will not stop. But have you ever heard of all those things where people like ask chat GPT or something? Like trick questions and AI answers them wrong. Yeah, it is wrong now. I don't see how that fits the argument though. True. But here's what's interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if maybe one country stopped AI or one business. Maybe one business or something like that could stop. But if one business stops, do you think that will stop the other tens of thousands of businesses and countries who are still doing it? No. So what is your plan to get those tens of thousands of countries and corporations to stop? Well, if there's tens of thousands of all these corporations, then how is there gonna be enough resources for them to keep on making AI? So that's kind of hard. There's a lot of AI companies and a lot of countries are already doing it. So there wouldn't be more and more corporations doing it. It would really be fewer and fewer corporations that are very big. That's true. But if these few very powerful AI corporations are gonna be here, people tend to be very competitive when it comes to things like that. Do you think they will start trying to be better than the other companies and then it'll just be totally different? Yes, other people will try to do it, but that will just that's even an argument on my side, because that if people are trying to just one up people, are going to just keep trying to make better and better AI, which will make it harder to stop it. Okay. I don't know how to argue against that. That's pretty much it. Okay, I do have one more argument, but it seems I might have won this debate. We might have to come back and try another one some other time. But remember, it's all up to what the audience thinks and who made a better debate in the audience eyes. Or rather, ears. Okay, so my last argument is that AI is actually being used for medical purposes and is going to make cures to many diseases. So to just throw away this tool and not be able to save people and things like that is going to be a thing that many people will not want. And then if those cures backfire, people will just keep trying to make better ones. Got basically what you're saying? Because no matter what, people will just try and improve it and improve it. Well, no, that's not the goal. The goal is to make the AI powerful enough to make a cure the first time for any new disease. Then if we're just feeding everything, all our information, won't people just forget how to do stuff because make their robots do it? Yes, that's what will happen to humans, but again, I don't see how that is a problem. If humans forget how to do stuff, how will they how will they stop AI? How will AI keep going? The goal is to make AI smarter than us. So if AI is smarter than us, then it will be smart enough to reproduce itself and to keep going. We have made an early prototype of some robot that can reproduce itself. So you're saying that goal is to basically turn us into robot slaves? Essentially make robots our slaves. That's a goal. But if the robots are smarter than us, how are they gonna be our slaves? Humans are trying to make them smarter than us, but they're also hoping that they won't take over us. I'm not saying that they're not going to take over us. I'm just saying that there's a good chance that they are. Well, people are hoping, and I don't see why people won't uprise against it. Wait, so you think people are gonna uprise against it? I mean, if you're saying that lots of people are hoping that uh AI won't take over the world, why aren't they protesting? Because of these other economic and medical reasons. Uh money and medical, and it really just now people aren't really worried about it because it kind of seems like a joke. Like you can ask Chi Chat GBT what color the sky is, and it might say red. We don't actually have AI yet. AI is artificial intelligence. We do not have intelligence yet. This is the I don't AI is planning to come by 2030, which still seems crazy soon. So basically, then what you're saying is AI is just like a calculator, just for like words and phrases and ideas and things like that. Right now it is. But you're saying people are gonna turn it into artificial intelligence? Yes. That is the goal for AI. That is humanity's goal for AI. So humanity's goal is for AI to take over the world. No, humanity's goal is to make AI smarter than us so it can save people for medical reasons and make money and a lot of things like that. So basically they're making robot gods. Yeah, you could say that. Alright, well, all I'm saying is that people if people get took took taken over by robots, not my fault. I never said it was. I know. But you said you're gonna stop it. How are you gonna stop it specifically? Well, nobody's gonna believe that anyone's gonna stop it. Then someone's gonna have to start all that. This is not something where someone just changes the world and saves it. So when you let's say, let's say all of the world wanted to delete AI. Let's just make that right now. Yeah. I feel like there's still some problems because there's let's say everyone wants to delete AI, but one person. So are we saying that that one person is very powerful or are they just an average person? They're just a person who can code and type. So the real reality of it all is that code can't really be deleted. A few million people are still gonna want to use it, and in that they're just gonna keep using like you can't just delete code. Okay. I really want to know how you think it can be stopped. Well if you're saying that people aren't gonna want to stop using the good factors of AI, and then the bad factors of AI won't stop, and that's how AI is going to. Humans are making AI for three reasons. They want AI to do things for them, which yes, will leave everybody jobless and everybody bored, and that will be terrible. That will be the start of like a robot apocalypse, essentially. Number two, they want money. And number three, for health reasons. So what's money gonna do for all these powerful people when nobody is gonna nobody else is gonna have any money? See, they don't care about the future. They care about right now. They are promising this stuff in the future, but they don't really care about what happens in the future. They care your God is doing they are not gonna live there. So basically they're dooming the world for the next generation. Possibly. They're really there's they want money, and there's the vision that it can help with medical reasons, and the vision that it can do anything for everybody. Okay, then if AI is gonna be so intelligent and stuff, how do we know it's not gonna be plotting its own things for its own purposes? Well, it very well could be, I guess. I'm just saying, if there are so many obvious bad things about AI, then why aren't people doing anything about it? Well, that seems like a great question to end our episode. So that was all the time for this week's episode, folks. I hope you enjoyed. And would you like to say anything before we conclude, Alton? Are you human? Yes, I'm human, duh. Okay, so basically you're blaming your entire species for the end of the world. The act out of. Okay, well. I think that's the end of the episode. I hope you listening at home enjoyed the first episode of A Case Floor. I hope you come back next week for more episodes and don't forget to vote on our website afterwards. Bye. Hope you enjoyed listening.
